- - “After we extract and confirm TPLs, we collect the required resources to calculate the metrics. First, we download the library's files (jar and aar) and the release metadata from the Maven website [45]; this is required to calculate SFS, MSS, UD, and UPC metrics as they depend on the source code of the library, except for UD metric, which requires only releases' dates. We use the RevAPI website tool [46] to check the difference between the two Maven library releases. RevAPI tool [46] shows the difference between two APIs in terms of changes and their severities; we consider "BREAKING" and "POTENTIALLY_BREAKING" as breaking changes and others as non-breaking changes to calculate the BCR metric. Unfortunately, the RevAPI tool [46] sometimes fails to get the API difference for a library; in that case, we ignore the BCR metric for that library and calculate compatibility as of DD and UD metrics only. Figure 8 shows the process of calculating compatibility metrics.” ([“JSSOFTWARE-D-24-00320_reviewer.pdf”, p. 26](zotero://select/library/items/AUC6ZP72)) ([pdf](zotero://open-pdf/library/items/L9JTAQSZ?page=26&annotation=DQNNC8RE)) #ffd400

- The paper presents an approach supporting the management of third-party libraries of software systems. In particular, the authors propose a TPL update prioritization approach, aiming to assist mobile app developers in improving their decision-making process. The study includes a survey of practitioners to understand TPL update behaviors, identifying five TPL categories: Compatibility, Accessibility, Update Effort, Business Value, and Security. Metrics are proposed for each category, and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) methods are used to rank the libraries for updates. The approach is automated via a chatbot, and a case study with seven participants shows the chatbot's usefulness and efficiency.
- The paper is about an interesting topic, and I appreciate that the authors have already worked on improving the paper to address concerns raised during the first review round. I have some concerns about the current version of the manuscripts that are related to some presentation issues, and to limitations of the shown evalutions. In particular,
- In different places in the paper, the authors use "recently" or "recent" to refer to documents from 3-4 years ago. Overall, the authors should consider the most recent works. They need relevant papers, e.g., from the editions 2022 and 2023 of top SE venues.
- Even though Table 1 supports the TPLs categories and factors, the descriptive text of the table does not motivate the importance of the library prioritizations
- Some metric definitions need to be improved. For instance, the security metric presented in Sec. 5.1.5 is based on the number of security threats related to the library of interest. Unfortunately, the sources of such a number are not clear.
- The text in Sec 4.2 is inconsistent with the numbers shown in Tab. 3. I suggest revising the whole section, mainly because the sentence "we found that 67% of our participants consider TPL updates' prioritization challenging." is not supported by the previous discussions.
- Page 19 needs to be revised and detailed because a disassembly operation is performed to get the source code of the libraries under analysis.
- The evaluation presented in Section 6 is based on 3 GitHub repositories. Can you comment on the representativeness of these thee repositories?
- Section 6.1 needs to be clarified. What's the goal of the metric evaluation? Is it to double-check the values of the given metrics? Even comparing the time needed by the evaluators and those by the approach implementation is not relevant.
- According to the discussion on page 25, the implemented tool calculates metrics faster than humans. Is this the kind of feedback authors wanted to get?
- What is the goal of asking evaluators to calculate the percentage of closed issues in the last quarter? Is this to test the correctness of the developed metrics? A similar comment can be given for the other tasks shown in Tab. 14.
